Nexium 24HR, also known as Nexium 24HR acid-regulating drug, is a combination of two drugs, esomeprazole and omeprazole. It’s the first of a new class of diuretics that includes a new class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These drugs work by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach and intestines.
The study was published in the journalJAMA Internal Medicine.
“Many patients experience side effects such as diarrhea, indigestion, loss of appetite, stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, and fatigue,” the authors wrote in their study. “When side effects are the most prevalent, patients should be aware of them and promptly report them to their physician or health care professional.”
Some of the side effects reported in the study were mild, like nausea and vomiting, but they were less common than they are in other cases of PPI-associated diarrhea.
Most side effects are mild, too, but the authors say there are concerns that they could cause serious health complications.
“When an individual experiences a side effect or adverse effect, the doctor or pharmacist can determine if it is due to other conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or certain medications,” the authors wrote.
The study was funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and the National Institute of Health. It also was supported by a grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
The authors say they are still studying the effects of Nexium 24HR on patients with certain conditions. While some patients in this study are using these drugs, they do not expect they will have any effect on patients with other conditions.
“This study provides important information about how drug interactions are likely to affect the development of disease in individuals taking this class of drug,” said Dr. Lisa Schwartz, a physician at NYU Grossman Cancer Center. “There’s a lot of confusion about whether PPI-associated diarrhea can be caused by an underlying condition or by something else.”
This is part of the growing body of research showing that PPI-associated diarrhea is linked to a number of health problems.
“There are many factors that can influence diarrhea and these medications can have similar effects on the gastrointestinal tract,” said Dr. David Krumholz, M. D., an endocrinologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.
The authors also say that if a patient takes other drugs that cause diarrhea, he or she should be cautious, and consult with a doctor for more information.
“The importance of the safety profile of the drug should always be weighed against the potential risks of adverse effects.”
Some PPI-associated diarrhea was reported in patients taking esomeprazole. One patient in this study had diarrhea that started within three days of taking a PPI, and had to be hospitalized.
“Esomeprazole can cause serious diarrhea,” the authors wrote.
The authors say other PPI-associated diarrhea is also a potential risk.
“There’s no reason why this drug should not be used,” they wrote.
“If it is prescribed to a patient who is not taking other medications, the benefits of the medication outweigh the possible risks.”
“It is possible that a patient has diarrhea due to the drug, and the benefits of the medication outweigh the risks.”
“Patients should be aware of potential side effects and make sure they are taking a safe and appropriate dose of a drug,” the authors said.
“If there is a concern about any effect on the gastrointestinal tract, the doctor should be aware of the potential risks and should monitor the patient closely.”
In addition, some side effects reported in the study were also reported as a possible risk of PPI-associated diarrhea.
